Kevin Wangaya Crowned SportPesa Premier League Player of the Month for April

Nairobi United’s rising star Kevin Wangaya has officially been named the SportPesa Premier League Player of the Month for April 2026. The 20-year-old midfielder’s exceptional run of form has not only earned him individual honors but has also solidified his reputation as one of the most clinical creative forces in Kenyan football today.

Wangaya was a pivotal figure for the "NaiBois" throughout April, a month in which the team remained unbeaten across five fixtures. The young playmaker recorded an impressive six-goal contributions—netting three goals and providing three assists—which directly translated into seven crucial points for the league debutants.

Wangaya’s impact was felt immediately and consistently throughout the month. His knack for finding the back of the net in high-stakes moments proved decisive: He scored the opening goals in three separate matches against Mathare United, Posta Rangers, and Mara Sugar. Perhaps his most standout performance came against Murang’a SEAL, where his two assists sparked a thrilling rally, helping Nairobi United overturn a 2-0 deficit to secure a 4-2 victory while adding a late goal to seal the victory. Under his influence, the team managed three wins and two draws in April, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a top-tier finish.

With this win, Wangaya becomes the second youngest player to receive the accolade since its inception six months ago, trailing only 17-year-old Humphrey Aroko of Kariobangi Sharks.

"I'm really honored to win this award," Wangaya said during the trophy presentation. "Seeing Aroko win it earlier in the season was a big motivation—it showed what's possible. I’ve just stayed focused, worked hard, and I’m happy to see it paying off."

Wangaya joined Nairobi United in February 2026 and has quickly become the heartbeat of Godfrey Oduor’s squad. His recent performances have also sparked conversation regarding a potential call-up to the Harambee Stars, with many analysts suggesting he is "knocking on the door" of national team coach Benni McCarthy ahead of the AFCON 2027 tournament.

The race for the April award was tightly contested. Wangaya edged out:

  • Edward Masembe (APS Bomet): The defender led his side to three clean sheets and contributed a goal in their battle against relegation.

  • Daniel Ogembo (Kenya Police FC): The goalkeeper was instrumental for the defending champions, recording four clean sheets

  • Michael Karamow (Nairobi United): Wangaya’s own teammate was also in the running after netting five goals in five matches.

For his efforts, Wangaya walks away with a custom-made trophy and a KSh 50,000 cash prize courtesy of SportPesa. As the league enters its final stretch, all eyes will be on the young midfielder to see if he can maintain this "red-hot" form and lead Nairobi United to a historic finish in their debut top-flight season.
