FIFA Demands Compliance as It Rejects Procedures in FKF Leadership Dispute
Hussein Mohammed

The ongoing power struggle within the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has reached a definitive turning point as FIFA has officially stepped in to block the attempted ousting of FKF President Hussein Mohammed.

In a correspondence dated 25 May 2026, the global governing body signaled that it would not recognize the recent actions taken by the FKF National Executive Committee (NEC). FIFA, through its Chief Member Associations Officer, Elkhan Mammadov, delivered a stinging rebuke regarding the attempt to force President Hussein Mohammed to step aside.

The letter explicitly stated:

“The information and documentation provided do not demonstrate that the applicable procedural requirements were respected. FIFA therefore categorically rejects the procedure that has been followed in this matter.”

The dispute, which has paralyzed the federation for the past month, originated from allegations surrounding a KSh 42 million insurance deal for the 2025 CHAN tournament. While the NEC sought to suspend President Mohammed alongside other key officials, FIFA has made it clear that internal maneuvers must adhere strictly to the statutes of the sport.

FIFA’s intervention is not merely a rejection of the recent proceedings but a stern directive for the federation to reset its approach to administration. The global body has demanded a higher standard of transparency and constitutional adherence moving forward.

FIFA further reiterated:

“We trust that the National Executive Committee and all concerned parties will take the above considerations fully into account and will ensure that any future actions are conducted in strict conformity with the FKF Constitution and the principles of good governance.”

The standoff began on 24 April 2026, when a section of the NEC attempted to install Deputy President McDonald Mariga as the interim leader. Since then, the matter has been entangled in both the Sports Disputes Tribunal and the High Court, which had previously issued orders protecting the status quo.

With FIFA now declaring the removal process null and void due to procedural failures, the federation finds itself at a crossroads. All eyes are now on the NEC to see if they will heed FIFA’s call to align their actions with the FKF Constitution or continue a path that risks further international isolation for Kenyan football.
