Mombasa United Dominate Mwatate United 3-0 to Claim Derby Bragging Rights
Mombasa United delivered a commanding performance to secure derby bragging rights after a convincing 3-0 victory over Mwatate United in a National Super League (NSL) encounter played at Mbaraki Sports Club on Wednesday, 17th December.
Under the guidance of head coach Gilbert Selebwa, Mombasa United started the match on the front foot, setting a high tempo from the opening whistle. Winger Nehemiah Onchiri was a constant menace down the flanks, sending in dangerous deliveries that kept the Taita Taveta-based side under sustained pressure.
The early dominance paid off in the 6th minute when Onchiri, who has been in fine form this season, calmly converted from the penalty spot to give the hosts an early lead. Mombasa United continued to dictate play and doubled their advantage in the 30th minute through Fidel Omondi, whose well-taken goal ensured the home side went into the halftime break with a deserved 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Mwatate United attempted to mount a comeback and enjoyed brief spells of pressure, forcing Mombasa United goalkeeper Richard Obenyo into a number of crucial saves. However, the visitors struggled to find a breakthrough as the hosts remained solid at the back.
The game was effectively put to bed when captain Kevin Okoth produced a moment of brilliance, unleashing a superb 23-yard strike that left the Mwatate goalkeeper with no chance. The goal capped off an impressive all-round performance from Mombasa United.
Mwatate United were handed a late opportunity to pull one back in the final minute after being awarded a penalty, but Kipngeno Nickson failed to convert, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.
Speaking after the match, a delighted head coach Gilbert Selebwa praised his players for their performance and commitment, though he admitted the scoreline could have been more emphatic.
“I am happy with the boys and the win. I think if we could have been more composed in the final third, we could have finished the game much earlier. We lost at least five to eight clear chances in the first half,” said Selebwa.
Looking ahead, the Mombasa United tactician emphasized the importance of their upcoming weekend fixture against newly promoted Gucha Stars. He noted that a win would be crucial as the team approaches the half-season break.
“Gucha Stars have many young and talented players, just like Mwatate, so it won’t be an easy game. But winning it will put us in a good position. We want to finish at least in position two as we head into the window break,” he added.
The emphatic derby victory further strengthens Mombasa United’s credentials this season and sends a strong message to their NSL rivals as they prepare for the next crucial phase of the campaign.
