Exclusive: Bernard Mwalala Returns to Bandari FC for Second Stint

Bandari FC have re appointed Bernard Mwalala as head coach, marking the start of his second spell in charge of the Mombasa based club.

The Dockers have turned to a familiar figure in their search for stability and renewed competitiveness, bringing back a coach who oversaw one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history. Mwalala rejoins Bandari from Shabana FC, where he had been serving as assistant coach.

Mwalala first joined Bandari from Nzoia Sugar in mid 2018 and quickly made his mark. Under his leadership, Bandari emerged as genuine title contenders, finishing second in the league in consecutive seasons, both times behind Gor Mahia. Those finishes remain the club’s highest league positions in recent times.

He also delivered silverware, guiding Bandari to victory in the FKF Cup. The triumph earned the club a direct ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup, where Mwalala went on to lead the team in continental competition in 2019.

Despite the success, his first tenure came to an end in 2020 following his dismissal. Several years later, Bandari have opted to bring him back, banking on his experience and familiarity with the club to steer them forward.

The re appointment reflects Bandari’s intent to return to the consistency and competitiveness that defined Mwalala’s earlier spell, as the club seeks to re establish itself among the top sides in Kenyan football.
