Agnes Olesi Inspires Bandari Queens to Derby Glory Over Mombasa Olympic Ladies
Agnes Olesi proved to be the difference-maker as Bandari Queens claimed derby bragging rights with a hard fought 2-0 victory over neighbours Mombasa Olympic Ladies in an FKF Women's National Super League clash played on saturday afternoon at Mbaraki Sports Club.
The match kicked off at a high tempo, with both sides eager to draw first blood.Bandari Queens came closest early on when forward Saum Mnyazi missed a golden tap-in opportunity ,much to the frustration of the home crowd.
The first half ended goalless, despite Bandari Queens dominating large spells of possession.Mombasa Ladies defender Loise Akinyi delivered a standout perfomance at the back ,bravely clearing several aerial balls despite being the shortest player on the pitch. In the midfield ,Bandari's Florida Bokole dictated play, linking defence and attack with composure and authority.
Bandari Queens Head Coach Jonathan Washe made a decisive double substitution in the 50th minute, introducing striker Agnes Olesi - and the move paid off almost instantly.Just ten minutes after coming on ,Olesi broke the deadlock, calmly tapping in after a well-delivered cross from Mercyline Mwalimu following a swift counterattack.
The hungry forward was not done yet.A neat one-two exchange involving Irene Namale set Olesi through once again, and she made no mistake, firing home her seond goal of the afternoon to seal all three points for Bandari Queens.
Speaking after the match,Mombasa Olympic Assistant Coach Michael Mito admitted disappointment but praised his side's effort.
''It's a derby,of course we are disappointed with the result, but my girls played well.We were punished mainly through counterattacks. We are not in a good position at the moment, but the way we have started the second leg gives us hope.We now have a deeper squad and we will fight hard to improve our standings'' he said.
On the winning side,Bandari Queens Head Coach Jonathan Washe lauded his players for their discpline and resilience.
''The game was not easy, but the girls maintaned discpline and it paid off in the second half.We are on a mission and this is a good start for the second leg.Next we face the league leaders, and this time around we are going for maximum points,''he stated.
The victory boosts Bandari Queens' confidence as they look to build momentum in the second leg of the season, while Mombasa Olympic Ladies will be seeking quick recovery as they battle to cimb the table.
