CONGO BOYZ COMPLETE DERBY DOUBLE AS SIMBA APPAREL'S PROMOTION HOPES TAKE A HIT

Congo Boyz delivered a disciplined and determined performance to secure a crucial 2-0 victory over Simba Apparel at Serani Sports Complex on Sunday, May 31, dealing a significant blow to Simba's National Super League promotion ambitions.

The victory also saw Congo Boyz complete a league double over their rivals, having won the first-leg encounter 1-0 away at Changamwe earlier in the season.

The match began at a high tempo, with Simba Apparel showing attacking intent from the opening whistle. Forwards Charles Lumumba and Peter Oginga led the charge as Simba searched for an early breakthrough, but Congo Boyz's well-organized defence stood firm and denied every attempt.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 27th minute when Beuchi Kassim calmly finished off a well-worked move. Alphonse Washe provided an excellent pass that split the Simba defence, leaving goalkeeper Lary Otieno with no chance as Kassim slotted home to give Congo Boyz a deserved lead.

Congo Boyz suffered a setback in the 39th minute when Muga Tyson was shown a straight red card following a foul on Brian Juma, reducing the hosts to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Congo Boyz remained composed and continued to threaten on the counterattack.

Their resilience paid off in the 42nd minute when Ali Washe produced a brilliant solo run following a swift counterattack before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to double his side's advantage and give Congo Boyz a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Simba Apparel returned strongly in the second half and sought to capitalize on their numerical advantage. They created several chances and earned four free-kicks in promising positions, but failed to find a breakthrough. Congo Boyz goalkeeper Samuel Okello was in outstanding form, making a series of crucial saves to preserve his side's clean sheet.

The hosts' task became even more difficult in the 73rd minute when Alphonso Wanje received a second yellow card for unsporting behaviour. Having already been booked in the first half, Wanje was sent off, leaving Congo Boyz with just nine players on the pitch for the remainder of the contest.

Despite being reduced to nine men, Congo Boyz produced a spirited defensive display in the closing stages. They absorbed relentless pressure from Simba Apparel, with defenders making crucial blocks and clearances to protect their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.

The victory not only secured local bragging rights but also completed an impressive season double over Simba Apparel after their earlier 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture at Changamwe.

For Simba Apparel, the defeat could prove costly in the race for promotion. They remain second in the standings after 26 matches, level on points with leaders Spitfire, who have played one game fewer. With only three matches remaining, the battle for the sole National Super League promotion spot remains finely poised.

Meanwhile, Congo Boyz will take confidence from a hard-fought derby victory that showcased both their attacking quality and defensive resilience, even after finishing

the match with nine men.
