KPL Records: Champions, Unbeaten Runs & New Season Preview
From Gor Mahia’s 21 titles and unbeaten seasons to Kenya Police’s historic first crown in 2025, explore the full record of Kenya Premier League champions and what to expect in the new season.
The Kenyan Premier League has produced drama, dominance and disruption since its inception in 1963. Over six decades later, the story of the nation’s top flight is one of tradition meeting transformation, as established giants fight to protect their crowns while ambitious newcomers threaten to rewrite history.
The list of champions stretches across 14 clubs. Nakuru All Stars were the very first winners in 1963, and names such as Luo Union, Feisal and Utalii once held the mantle of glory. Yet only a handful have consistently stayed at the summit. Today, the story is defined by Gor Mahia, Tusker, AFC Leopards, Ulinzi Stars and most recently Kenya Police.
Gor Mahia remain the undisputed kings of Kenyan football. The green army have clinched the league title a record 21 times, including nine in the last eleven years. Their dominance in the modern era has been unmatched, and their trophy cabinet includes two unbeaten league campaigns — in 1976 and again in 2015. No other Kenyan club has ever managed a full unbeaten season, let alone two.
The club has also enjoyed multiple streaks of consecutive titles, winning three in a row on two occasions: first between 1983 and 1985, and again between 2017 and 2019. Yet even with their dominance, the four-peat remains elusive — no club in Kenyan history has ever strung together four straight league wins.
Behind Gor, Tusker FC and AFC Leopards share a fierce legacy. Tusker, backed by Kenya Breweries, are the most successful corporate club in the country with 13 titles to their name. Their legacy is one of consistency, with championships spread across the 1970s, 1990s, 2000s and 2020s.
AFC Leopards, on the other hand, are woven into the fabric of Kenyan football. Formerly known as Abaluhya FC, they have 12 league titles, second only to Gor Mahia. The Leopards enjoyed a golden period between the late 1960s and early 1990s, including a stunning run of three consecutive titles between 1980 and 1982. Yet their last triumph came in 1998. Twenty-seven years later, Ingwe remain without a crown, locked in the longest drought of any of the traditional giants.
Ulinzi Stars are the most decorated forces club in Kenyan football, with four league titles. Their golden run came between 2003 and 2005, when they won three in a row, joining Gor and Leopards as the only teams to manage such a feat. Their most recent triumph came in 2010, and they remain the standard bearers for military football in the country.
Beyond the giants, several smaller clubs have left unforgettable marks on Kenyan football history. Mathare United, born from Nairobi’s Mathare slums, completed a fairy-tale rise by winning the league in 2008. Their triumph remains a symbol of community football rising to the top, inspiring a generation of grassroots players.
Sofapaka, nicknamed Batoto ba Mungu, stunned the country by winning the league on debut in 2009 — a record that stands unmatched in Kenya. Their immediate success brought new energy and professionalism into the league.
Sony Sugar clinched their only league title in 2006, becoming the first sugar-belt club to achieve the feat. It was a win celebrated across Nyanza and Western regions, breaking Nairobi’s dominance.
Oserian FC, backed by the flower farm industry, won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002. Their rise proved that even small corporate-backed outfits could topple the giants with the right structure.
Utalii FC, representing the Utalii Hotel School, pulled off a stunning league victory in 1997. Though short-lived, their triumph remains one of the most unlikely in the league’s history.
These one-off champions, while unable to maintain dominance, added color and unpredictability to the competition, ensuring the league’s story is more than just Gor, Tusker and Leopards.
The most recent chapter in Kenyan football history belongs to Kenya Police FC. Promoted to the top flight in 2021, they defied the odds by clinching their first league title in the 2024/25 season. Their rise was nothing short of remarkable: after winning just one of their opening eight games, the team went on an extraordinary 13-match unbeaten streak under coach Etienne Ndayiragije.
By the season’s end, Police had conceded only 16 goals, the tightest defence in the league, and finished top of the table ahead of Gor Mahia and Tusker. Their maiden title confirmed that the balance of power in Kenyan football is shifting, with new forces emerging to challenge the old guard.
The 2024/25 Season by Numbers
The season produced 234 matches and 472 goals, averaging just over two goals per game. The golden boot was shared by Moses Shumah and Emmanuel Osoro, who each netted 16 goals to finish as joint-top scorers. AFC Leopards delivered the biggest away win of the campaign by thrashing Mathare United 4-0, while KCB’s 4-3 victory over Mara Sugar was the highest-scoring match, highlighting the competitive edge and unpredictability of the campaign.
As the new season approaches, the storylines are tantalising. Will Gor Mahia reclaim their crown and push their tally to 22? Can Tusker mount another challenge, or will Leopards finally break their long drought? More importantly, can Kenya Police prove their maiden triumph was no fluke and usher in a new era?
