Kenyan Striker Moses Shumah Fires Power Dynamos into CAF Champions League Group Stage

Kenyan forward Moses Shumah played a pivotal role as Power Dynamos secured a historic qualification to the CAF Champions League group stage, marking a major milestone for Zambian football.

The Zambian champions advanced with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Uganda’s Vipers SC following a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their second preliminary round match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Shumah, who had scored in the first leg in Uganda during Dynamos’ 2-1 win, once again proved decisive on home soil. After a goalless first half, the former Kakamega Homeboyz striker broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, sending the Aba Yellow fans into jubilation. Ten minutes later, Vipers equalized through Karim Watambala, but the Zambian side held firm to secure their passage to Africa’s elite club competition.

Power Dynamos had earlier seen a goal disallowed in the 14th minute when Frederick Mulambia was adjudged to have handled the ball before scoring. The closing stages of the match were tense, with both sides pushing for a winner in front of a lively crowd.

Speaking after the match, Coach Osward Mutapa described the qualification as a fitting gift for Zambia as the country celebrates its 61st Independence anniversary. He hailed the achievement as both exciting and significant, noting that Zambia had not been represented in the group stage for many years.

Vipers SC coach Ivan Minnaert congratulated Power Dynamos for their success and said his focus would now shift to domestic league duties back in Uganda.

With this result, Power Dynamos join the continent’s best clubs in the CAF Champions League group stage — a stage they last reached decades ago — with Moses Shumah emerging as one of the key architects of their memorable run.
